Why We Exist
The Data Speaks for Itself.
The Black Mortgage Professional Alliance (BMPA) is dedicated to addressing and mitigating the significant disparities that minorities, particularly Black and Hispanic communities, face in the housing and mortgage industries. These disparities underscore the necessity of BMPA's mission to foster positive change and promote equitable homeownership opportunities.
Homeownership Rates
According to a NAR Report, "A Snapshot on Race and Homebuying in America":
Black Households: As of the second quarter of 2022, the homeownership rate for Black households was 45%, compared to 75% for White households. This 30-percentage-point gap has remained relatively unchanged over the past three decades, highlighting persistent inequities in access to homeownership.
Hispanic Households: In the same period, Hispanic households had a homeownership rate of 48%, also indicating a substantial disparity when compared to White households.
Mortgage Denial Rates
According to an Urban.org Report, "The Future of Headship and Homeownership":
Black applicants are more likely to have their mortgage applications denied compared to White applicants. For instance, data indicates that Black applicants experience higher denial rates for home purchase loans.
Hispanic applicants also face elevated denial rates, though specific percentages vary by study. These higher denial rates persist even after accounting for factors such as creditworthiness, suggesting systemic issues within the mortgage approval process.
Historical Context
According to the US Dept. of Commerce (Census) Report, "Homeownership by Race and Ethnicity of Householder":
The gap in homeownership rates between Black and White families in the U.S. is wider today than it was during the era when discriminatory practices like redlining were legally sanctioned. In 1960, there was a 27-point gap between Black homeownership (38%) and White homeownership (65%). Today, this gap has increased, underscoring the enduring impact of systemic barriers.

Contemporary Challenges
According to HUD, "Unequal Burden: Income and Racial Disparities in Subprime Lending":
Mortgage Denials: Black applicants are between 1.8 and 2.5 times as likely to be denied mortgages as white applicants with similar characteristics. Latino borrowers face denial rates approximately 1.5 times higher than their white counterparts.
Subprime Lending: Minority borrowers were more likely to receive high-cost, high-risk loans during the housing boom, even when equally qualified as white borrowers.
Ongoing Discrimination: Studies indicate that racial disparities in mortgage lending persist, with minority applicants often facing higher denial rates and less favorable loan terms. Click HERE to view chart data.
